What is the best time to visit Krabi?
Krabi is located in the south west of Thailand and enjoys a tropical climate. During the day the temperature never really drops below 27°, which makes it a perfect destination for those who want to escape the cold weather at home. The yearly average temperature in Krabi is 32°. We have 2 seasons here: the dry season and the rainy season.
It all depends on the wind: when the monsoon winds reverse, you can expect a change in weather. This happens twice a year: somewhere in April or May towards the wet season and back to the dry season in November or December. The seasonal changeover doesn’t always happen at the same time. That’s why it’s possible to experience wet weather in early April or dry and sunny weather as early as September.
The best time to visit Krabu is between late December and March. During these months you can enjoy clear blue skies and calm seas. The temperature is quite moderate: it doesn’t get too hot and it rarely rains. There is a small chance of a tropical shower but it rarely lasts more than 1 hour. Please note that this is what we call peak season in Krabi. Because of the nice weather tourists flock to Krabi and prices increase compared to the low season. Especially during Christmas and New year’s eve you can expect to pay a supplement when booking your hotel in Krabi.
If you take a look on the weather forecast of Google or Accuweather, you will see mostly thunderstorm icons. This is because there is always a slight chance of rain or storm on any given day. Even if it’s dry and sunny you might see dark clouds or raindrops on your screen. It’s better not to trust these websites at all as they make you feel down about your holiday! Remember you are visiting a tropical country where the weather can change from minute to minute. There are good websites around that give you a better idea of the weather and rain during the day. Our tip: try Windguru where you can see an hourly Krabi weather chart for the next few days. This usually is more accurate than ‘the big’ weather websites, but of course we can’t guarantee that. Check it out here: Windguru Ao Nang.
The dry season runs between December and April. The northeastern monsoon winds brings us progressively hotter months. This is the busiest time in Krabi and called high season. It’s possible that hotels and tours are fully booked around this time, especially around Chinese New Year. The area will be filled up with Chinese tourists, so it’s smart to check if your holiday coincides with this busy week. Chinese New year is generally celebrated in late January or early February. Other than that you can expect dry and sunny weather during these months. The perfect time to visit Krabi if you don’t mind the crowds!
The seasonal changeover to the wet season is usually in April or May. The southeastern monsoon winds bring in rain, which can be torrential at times. The wettest months are usually September and October. If you plan visiting Krabi during these months it’s generally a gamble. It can rain non stop for days, but you can also experience dry and sunny weather with a short outburst of rain. This happens mostly in the evening. It’s also a cooler period so it might be the best time to visit if you can’t stand the heat of the hot months. It’s less crowded and hotels will likely give you a discount on their room prices. It also gives you the opportunity to do a tour in peace. What about a 4 island tour in rainy season? You might have the whole place to yourself!
